 Benzoic acid, also known as benzoic acid, has a molecular formula of C6H5COOH, 

and is a compound formed by the replacement of a hydrogen on a benzene ring with a carboxyl group (-COOH).

Normal temperature is scale-like or needle-like crystals with the smell of benzene or formaldehyde.

 Its vapor is very irritating and easily causes cough after inhalation. Slightly soluble in water,

easily soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol and ether.
Benzoic acid is a weak acid and stronger than fatty acids. They have similar chemical properties,

can form salts, esters, acid halides, amides, acid anhydrides, etc., and are not easily oxidized.

An electrophilic substitution reaction can occur on the benzene ring of benzoic acid,

 and meta-substituted products are mainly obtained.
Benzoic acid is widely found in nature in the form of free acids, esters or derivatives thereof.

Benzoic acid is often used as a drug or preservative, and has the effect of inhibiting the growth of fungi, bacteria,

and molds. When used for medicine, it is usually applied to the skin to treat ringworm skin diseases.

Used in synthetic fiber, resin, coating, rubber, tobacco industry. Initially,

 benzoic acid was prepared by retorting benzoin or by alkaline water hydrolysis, or by hydrolysis of uric acid. Industrially,

benzoic acid is prepared by oxidation of toluene with air in the presence of catalysts such as cobalt and manganese;

or by hydrolysis and decarboxylation of phthalic anhydride. Benzoic acid and its sodium salt can be used as latex, toothpaste,

 jam or other food bacteriostatic agents, and can also be used as a mordant for dyeing and printing.
